5 Interesting Facts About Pura Besakih That You Should Know

Pura Besakih, located on the slopes of Mount Agung in Bali, is widely celebrated as the island’s most significant Hindu spiritual complex. Known as the “Mother Temple” of Bali, this historic sanctuary holds profound religious, cultural, and architectural importance. Here are 5 fascinating facts about Pura Besakih that highlight its unique heritage:

1. Known as Bali’s “Mother Temple”

Pura Besakih is revered as the mother temple (Pura Kahyangan Jagat) for all Balinese Hindus. It serves as the spiritual center of the island, hosting major ceremonial gatherings and rituals where devotees from across Bali come together to pray.

2. A Massive Complex of 86

Temples Rather than being a single building, Besakih is an extensive complex comprising 86 individual temples built across terraced steps along the slopes of Mount Agung. The central and largest sanctuary within the complex is Pura Penataran Agung.

3. Miraculously Miracled During Mount Agung’s 1963

Eruption During the catastrophic eruption of Mount Agung in 1963, lava flows devastated surrounding villages but miraculously passed within meters of Pura Besakih, leaving the temple complex largely intact. The Balinese people regard this historic event as a divine manifestation of protection.

4. Dedicated to the Hindu Trinity (Trimurti)

The principal shrines inside Pura Penataran Agung honor the Hindu Trimurti—Brahma (the Creator), Vishnu (the Preserver), and Shiva (the Destroyer). Each deity is represented by distinct banner colors (Poleng and ceremonial colors): red for Brahma, black for Vishnu, and white for Shiva.

5. Ancient Roots Predating Balinese Hinduism

Historical and archaeological evidence suggests that the site was used as a place of worship long before Hinduism arrived in Bali. Ancient stone step structures (punden berundak) found at the base of the complex indicate prehistoric megalithic roots that were later integrated into Hindu architecture.
