Located just south of Ngurah Rai International Airport and Kuta, Jimbaran was historically a quiet, traditional fishing village with a bustling daily fresh fish market. Transformation began in the 1980s, and today Jimbaran is home to several world-class five-star beach resorts alongside comfortable mid-range hotels and luxury high-end villas perched on the hills overlooking the bay. This high-end residential appeal has earned the area nicknames such as the “Beverly Hills of Bali” and “Millionaire’s Row.”
The crescent-shaped Jimbaran Bay features a pleasant white-sand beach and calm, sheltered waters that offer a safe environment for swimming. In the evenings, three popular clusters of beachfront seafood restaurants become a major draw for travelers seeking fresh grilled catches accompanied by breathtaking ocean sunsets.
In addition to tourism and local fisheries, Jimbaran serves as an educational hub. It houses a campus of Gateway College (a Norwegian educational institution) in Kedonganan near Sari Segara Resort, with an additional facility and café located along Jalan Bantas Kangin. While the village features stylish boutiques and dining spots, it maintains a relaxed atmosphere with limited nightlife compared to neighboring beach towns.
Jimbaran enjoys a strategic location between Kuta and the Bukit Peninsula, flanked by Nusa Dua to the southeast and Uluwatu to the southwest. Its proximity offers easy access to the nightlife of Kuta and Seminyak, as well as the cultural attractions of Central Bali.
Situated only 10 to 15 minutes south of the airport, prepaid airport taxis are readily available. Most Jimbaran hotels also offer complimentary airport pickup upon advance request. Reaching Jimbaran takes approximately 20 minutes from Legian, Seminyak, or Sanur via the Mandara Toll Road.
For getting around locally, rental motorbikes and taxis are widely accessible. Thanks to its pedestrian-friendly coastal paths, Jimbaran is also recognized as one of the best areas in South Bali for walking and leisure strolls.
Jimbaran Bay is lined with one of Bali’s finest beaches, characterized by soft white sand and gentle waves suitable for both children and adults. The southern stretch near the Four Seasons Resort offers the quietest setting, though the entire shoreline provides a scenic environment for relaxation.
Arriving around 5:00 PM allows visitors to secure a table at one of the beachfront seafood restaurants, order drinks and fresh meals, and watch the vivid sunset over the Indian Ocean while awaiting their food.
Situated at the northern end of the bay near Jalan Tukad Ayung in Kedonganan, the traditional fish market receives fresh daily catches every morning. Supplying many of Bali’s top fine-dining establishments, the market offers a wide variety of fresh fish and shellfish. The best time to experience the market’s activity is between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM.
Beyond the beach, Jimbaran retains its traditional Balinese village character, with narrow streets and residential alleys (gangs) ideal for morning or afternoon walks. Exploring the local neighborhoods offers a glimpse into daily life, accompanied by warm welcomes from local residents. Jalan Pantai Jimbaran and Jalan Uluwatu serve as easy orientation landmarks while navigating the area.
